American Red Cross Introduction to Water Safety Training: Become an Ambassador for Water Safety (1.0 CNE Credit)

Water safety training to be presented by Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated® and the Red Cross is critically important for Black youth.  The following are several reasons:

  1. Disproportionate Drowning Rates
  • According to the CDC, Black children, particularly aged 5–19, drown at significantly higher rates than their white peers. For instance, Black children aged 10–14 drown in swimming pools at rates 7.6 times higher than white children in the same age group.
  • This disparity is linked to lower swim proficiency, lack of access to pools, and generational gaps in swimming skills.
  1. Historical and Systemic Barriers
  • Historically, Black communities have faced segregation and exclusion from public swimming facilities.
  • These policies created a generational cycle where swimming and water safety were not passed down, leaving many families without role models or formal training.
  1. Prevention Through Education
  • Water safety training and swim instruction significantly reduce the risk of drowning.
  • Teaching Black youth swimming skills empowers them with confidence and competence in aquatic environments.
  • It also opens up access to water-based recreation, sports, and even careers (lifeguarding, marine biology, etc.).
  1. Building Community Resilience
  • Training creates a ripple effect: when one child learns, they often teach or inspire others, including siblings and peers.
  • Community programs focused on water safety foster inclusivity and address health equity.
  1. Mental and Physical Health Benefits
  • Swimming is an excellent form of exercise and stress relief. Ensuring safe access to water activities supports overall youth well-being.
