According to the National Center for Health Statistics (2024), heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. The national death rate of heart disease is 320 per 100,000 among Virginians is 292 per 100,000 compared to higher rates of 346 per 100,00 in the city of Hampton and 332 per 100,00 in the surrounding city of Newport News (CDC, 2020). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020 national rate for stroke deaths is 72.6 per 100,000, among Virginians 74 per 100,000, in the city of Hampton 78 per 100,000 and in the surrounding city of Newport News 77 per 100,000 respectively. These rates all indicate a higher than national and state average of mortality rate of heart disease and stroke in the community of Hampton, Virginia the geographical location of Tau Chapter Incorporated, Chi Eta Phi, Sorority, Incorporated.
Furthermore, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association (2020) reported these astonishing statistics related to African Americans and Cardiovascular Disease:
• The 2017 overall death rate from cardiovascular disease (CVD) was 208 per 100,000. Death rates for African Americans were 264.8 for males and 166.3 for females (HHS, 2019).
